Kalachakra Festival – Tour Itinerary (5 Nights / 6 Days)

Kalachakra Festival in Ladakh

Validity: 1 July 2014 – 14 July 2014
Kalachakra
Kalachakra, which means ‘time-wheel’ or ‘time-cycles’, is a Sanskrit term used in Tantric Buddhism. An important and complex practice in Tibetan Buddhism, This festival in Ladakh has now especially come to be associated with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, who initiates thousands of people from India and abroad, into the practice every year during the Kalachakra festival. The ritual is based on understanding ‘time’ as a system for liberation and enlightenment.

Time as a concept in Buddhism
In Buddhism, time is referred to more as a measurement of change than hours and minutes. The ‘internal’ aspect of such a definition of time is measured by repeated occurrences such as a woman’s menstrual cycles. The ‘external’ aspects are measured through astronomical, astrological, cosmic and historical changes in the universe. The Kalachakra theory believes that the human body undergoes many physiological changes in its lifetimes. These changes have myriad effects on the mental and emotional cycles. Similarly, as the universe continually undergoes cohesion and destruction, so also, the human body goes through conception, growth and death. A human-being’s actions and thoughts amidst these changes, leads to the formation of karmic undercurrents. These make their presence felt at appropriate astrological, historical and life-changing moments. The ‘winds’ that give force to these karmic undercurrents are energy-impulses. The impulses cause the currents to flow in a particular direction. The Kalachakra theory equips the practitioner to understand these effects of time on the human mind and body. That helps them to deal with their karmas and put oneself on the path to salvation.
The Initiation process
The Initiation process
Initiation into Kalachakra festival is done by His Holiness The Dalai Lama. The process confers the practitioner with the permission to study and practice the Kalachakra Tantra. The practice should be done to free oneself and others from karmic suffering through the cleansing of internal and external experiences. The initiation is therefore a universal prayer for peace and harmony. This year, the Initiation ceremony in India will be held at Leh, Ladakh from the 3rd of July to 14th of July 2014. From 3rd July to 5th July, His Holiness and the monks of Namgyal Monastery will conduct rituals to prepare and consecrate the venue. From 6th July to 8th July, His Holiness will give preliminary teachings on ‘shetring’. On 9th July, the monks of Namgyal Monasterywil perform the Kalachakra Ritual Dance. From 10th July to 13th July, His Holiness will confer the Kalachakra Initiation. The programme will end on 14th July with ceremony offering prayers for the long life of His Holiness.

About the Kalachakra Tantra
About the Kalachakra Tantra
Kalachakra, as the term denotes, refers to the unique representation of time in the Kalachakra Tantra. The Tantra is divided into five chapters: ground kalachakra, inner kalachakra, astrology, and path & fruition. The Ground Kalachakra deals with the outer i.e. physical world (birth and death in the universe, the solar system etc). The Inner Kalachakra deals with the expression of human physical existence vis-à-vis winds, drops, channels etc. It also deals with the four states of mind i.e. waking, dreaming, deep sleep and orgasmic. The Path & Fruition chapters deal with the rituals of initiation and the actual meditation practices. Astrology finds a place in this ritual on the basis that whatever is in the cosmos, is also reflected in the human body. The effects of occurrences in the cosmos on the human body/mind are expressed through the astrological aspect of Kalachakra.
